The law firm of Pattison, Sampson, Ginsberg & Griffin, PLLC, traces its roots back to 1813 and the long association between the “Pattison” name and the practice of law in our community. It spans five generations, predating Edward Clinton Pattison, son of Elias Pattison – one of the first Canal boat proprietors on the newly constructed Erie Canal. The Pattison law firm was once located on Troy’s “Market Block,” at the corner of Third and River Streets, it then moved in 1885 to the former site of Union National Bank at 12 First Street and then finally moved to its current home at 22 First Street, Troy, in April of 1963.

Edward H. “Ebbie” Pattison joined his father, Edward Aston Pattison, as a partner in his law firm in 1925 after being an associate in a Wall Street firm for years. After Ebbie’s father died, Stephen H. Sampson became a partner in 1937 and remained an active and valued member of the firm and the Troy community until his passing.

The work Ebbie did for the Wall Street law firm in the 1920s included assisting in the creation of the “Julliard Musical Foundation,” an internationally recognized not-for-profit corporation that promotes musical arts. This exacting and exhaustive experience made an impression on young Ebbie, who later was instrumental in helping create the Eddy Foundation of Troy, one of the premier senior care organizations in the United States. To this day, the firm’s officers and associates continue their involvement and support of our region’s many notable not-for-profit and charitable organizations.

The firm’s most famous partner was, of course, Edward W. “Ned” Pattison. Ned joined the firm as an associate in the mid-1950s, about the same time Lambert L. Ginsberg did. Ned, a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Rensselaer County Treasurer, devoted much of his time and energy throughout his career to numerous community and civic organizations. Ned received the prestigious Root/Simpson Award in 1990 in recognition of his exemplary voluntary community service.

Ned was instrumental in creating the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Edward H. Pattison Citizenship Award, honoring those in our community who through their lives promote economic, cultural or humanitarian advancement. The “Ebbie” award continues to be supported by the firm.

The law firm of Pattison, Sampson, Ginsberg & Griffin, PLLC, is a general practice law firm, located in the historic district of downtown Troy, New York. The firm’s practice is extensive throughout Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga (the Capital District/Region), and elsewhere in the country.
